Toronto East General Hospital is making changes.
Firstly, they’re refreshing their strategic plan and are looking for community input. To have your say, check out their on-line survey.
Secondly, TEGH has joined forces with Toronto Police to ensure that community members dealing with a mental health crisis can get the proper support they need, through the development of the East Toronto Mobile Crisis Intervention Team. This new team pairs specially trained police officers from 54 and 55 divisions with mental health nurses from Toronto East General Hospital. So, when police receive a call about a mentally ill or emotionally distressed person, an officer AND a nurse from the team will respond in a separate police car to back up the primary emergency responders. For more information on the team, check out this article.
There has been a lot in the news lately about people with mental illness and how we as a society should support them (and are we doing enough?). This is a great local initiative – a step in the right direction.
