Quick update about the DECA and GECO event last week, which featured Australia’s Renew Newcastle founder Marcus Westbury. I was able to go, along with fellow Danforth Secordian Vito Mola.
We heard Marcus talk about the city of Newcastle’s history, the decay of it’s primary industry leading to a major economic shift in the city – this shift included an all-but-abandonment of the downtown core. Renew Newcastle is a not-for-profit organization that acts as a liaison between up-and-coming organizations and entrepreneurs (such as artists, record labels, photographers, galleries, etc), and landlords of vacant spaces.
This article in the Torontoist describes the venture well, and includes a video about it too. It’s worth a gander.
